Emergency Preparedness
Emergencies can happen at any time. By anticipating and preparing we can mitigate the impacts and undesirable consequences. While SFU has Emergency Response Teams ready to activate in the event of a disaster on any of our Campuses, everyone has a role to play.
SFU's Emergency Plan GP34 provides a framework for planning responding to and recovering from an emergency. The Plan is intended to provide guiding principles that when applied with flexibility can be utilized for various emergencies and circumstances. Additional emergency plans, such as the Severe Weather Plan and the Hazardous Material Emergency Plan, have also been developed to supplement and support the overall Emergency Plan.
Each Department should have its own Departmental Emergency and Business Continuity Plan in the event of a serious incident or significant business interruption.
In any emergency situation, SFU's priorities are to:
- Provide for health and safety of all responders
- Save lives
- Reduce suffering
- Protect public health
- Protect the environment
- Protect university property
- Restore university operations
- Reduce economic & social losses
